How homeopathy can help this summer

Most people would agree that summer is wonderful, but the season does also have its risks and potential hazards. Keeping a well-stocked homeopathic first aid kit to hand is essential to help you and your family through the season.

If you’re travelling

For general travel sickness, taking a combination of Cocculus, Tabacum and Petroleum prior to travelling can be very effective.

If you suffer from a mild fear of a fear of flying which gives you “butterflies in the stomach”, take Argentum nitricum. For more serious cases, Gelsemium can help. In both cases, take the remedy just before boarding the plane and repeat hourly if required.

If you are travelling long haul and suffer from jet lag, take Arnica. It’s more commonly known to help with bruising, but can also treat exhaustion. If you also have nausea and dizziness, try Cocculus.

Upset tummies

Picnics, BBQs, unfamiliar foods and too much alcohol can all lead to upset stomachs, in which case Nux vomica is the first remedy to reach for. For more serious cases of food poisoning with vomiting and diarrhoea, try Arsenicum album.

Insect bites and stings

Apis mellifica works well for insect bites, particularly if there is redness or swelling. For bites which feel chilly rather than hot, reach for Ledum palustre.

Dehydration and headache

Take Belladonna every couple of hours to help with the effects of too much sun, particularly if you have a throbbing headache. Glonoine can help if the headache is accompanied by hot flushes and can be taken every four hours for up to two days.

Sunburn

For painful sunburn, Cantharis can be taken up to three times an hour. It can also help to prevent blistering.

Cuts and bruises

If you’ve got young children, keep Arnica on hand to deal with bruising and Calendula for open cuts and grazes. Its antiseptic and rapid healing properties are ideal, especially if your child is in pain.

Your pharmacy is your friend

Finally – don’t forget to make use of your homeopathic pharmacy! Ainsworths, Helios and Freeman’s not only sell first-aid kits and commonly used remedies, but can also offer advice, either over the phone or in person.
